This paper examines the barriers faced in claiming human rights for women, particularly within the general human rights framework, and then proceeds to discuss ways in which CEDAW attempts to overcome these barriers at the normative level.

A website of the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), this site contains the text of the Convention in the six official languages; the history of the Convention, sections on the States Parties to the Convention, the Optional Protocol, accessions and reservations and country reports submitted to the Committee on the limination of Discrimination against Women. It talks of the Committee, the reporting procedure and the different CEDAW sessions held thus far. The website also provides information on the Commission on the Status of Women, the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995, and Beijing + 5 (2000).
